Gas Cylinders on Fire

July 15th, 2013

Everyone has heard stories of ruptured gas cylinders rocketing across the floor (and through walls), but seldom does one get to witness such an accident. Recently, a truck transporting a load of cylinders crashed on a Russian freeway and created this scene:

There were several other videos taken from a variety of angles (1 2 3). It’s interesting to watch one cylinder explode after another and to see the kind of speed a ruptured container can build. Obviously, these ubiquitous and relatively inconspicuous pieces of lab equipment present serious risks.

Perfectly set to “Scream and Shout” by will.i.am and Britney. Well played, Russian driver.

  2. Unstable Isotope Says:

Did the truck driver get out? I couldn’t see

@Unstable Isotope: At 0:39, I think the truck driver exits and run towards the median of the freeway. Unfortunately, I can’t find any written reports of the accident. I’m not sure if anyone was hurt or what the contents of the cylinders were.

I think the most interesting part of the video is from 0:39-0:43, where a cylinder rolls into the concrete barrier on the median and the valve ruptures. The cylinder shoots off, right then back, and it sounds like a jet engine spooling up.

Actually, on second glace, the valve might have already ruptured prior to collision with the wall.

You can see in the 3rd video that none of them have the safety cap over the regulator. They all look pretty old and beat up too, although may be a result of being on fire for a while..

At 0:39, shopping list: new pants, a lottery ticket, and maybe a spot in the 2016 Olympics for sprinting. Any Cyrillic readers able to tell what city this was in?

  7. -s. Says:

Pretty impressive indeed. Youtube comment says luckilly there was no victims. The title says only “GAZELI”. Whatever that means, I don’t think it is a city.

  8. Handles Says:

Google Translate says: “Ring Road, the inner side, near the town of Reutov
    burns “Gazelle”, exploding gas cylinders.”

Gazelle being the model of truck.

  9. Handles Says:

And from another video: “Soaring into the air “Gazelle” scattered on the Moscow Ring Road exploding gas cylinders. The accident injured one person. A driver’s car exploded police are looking for – a man set off on the run.”

According to my google translate, it says in one of the videos that: “In Soviet Russia, the gas cylinder shares the road with You!”

  11. Carol Says:

I think the truck driver exits and run towards the median of the freeway.
