Meet the Lab

September 7th, 2012

I would love for C&EN or Chemistry World to produce a hard-hitting, chemistry news show, but I doubt it will ever happen. Making a regular program would be a lot of work, assuming you could even find guests to show up. That said, a boy can dream, can’t he?

So, while I am not especially proud of this effort, I’ll throw it out there as food for thought:

Blergh! Go ahead and add “a nice voice” to the list of things I wish I had. Also, my deepest apologies to Jyllian Kemsley, Neil Withers, Rudy Baum, Derek Lowe, and E.J. Corey.

(And for those of you who have no idea what this post is about, watch this.)

Lets do a Google Hangout On Air show on this subject!

  2. Chemjobber Says:

Yes! I’ll violate Google Plus’ terms of service to make this happen!

I’m totally serious! I’ve been trying to put together a web talk show for AGES. And I’m sure that we could come up with an awesome pseudonym for your G+ Profile. Let’s call you EJ Sorenson. No one will suspect. Have your cam feed with heavy shadows and artificial rain in the background, mask your voice to make it deep and modulated. It’ll be ridiculous but likely one of the show’s biggest draws!

  4. Paul Says:

We could make it, but would anyone actually watch it?

  5. Chemjobber Says:

There’s about 30 people in this world who might listen to it, maybe 70.

It may not be hard-hitting enough for you, but Chemistry World already has a monthly news/interviews podcast. It generally features 3 members of the CW team talking about news stories from the latest issue of the magazine, plus interviews with scientists relating to the month’s feature articles.

If you listen to the latest edition here http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/podcast/CWpodcast.asp you can hear what Neil himself, Phil Robinson and Elinor Richards sound like, and if you go back through the archive a bit you’ll find all the other team members, including me…

  7. Neil Says:

No need to apologise Paul – I’m flattered to be in such august company, let alone featured on ChemBark!

And I think you make a good point. There’s definitely an audience for serious discussion, so we should address it.

  8. Chemjobber Says:

This is still a dream of mine.

  9. Paul Says:

Would you rather host “Meet the Lab” or serve as bureau chief of the ACS Media War Room?

  10. Chemjobber Says:

I’m not clever enough for rapid response; I’ll choose MtL.
