I just got an e-mail from a nice lady offering me $50 to insert a link into a post from several months ago. I turned the money down, of course. Everyone knows the only way to get an ad posted on this site is to publish an error-filled version somewhere else…like the one on page 38 of the Sept. 5th edition of C&EN:
This is ambiguous-Lewis-structure hell. Is the first compound an alcohol or an aldehyde? And why not draw the hydrogens on the secondary amines? To save space? Is that a primary amine in the upper right-hand corner? Why did they not draw the hydrogens there but did draw the hydrogens for the amine on the third row? I guess all hydrogens are implied…except when they’re explicit? Finally, I think the carbonyl group hanging over the ring on the bottom row looks hellabizarre, though I know what they’re getting at. Still, I won’t be buying any compounds from them.
